If you love being behind the wheel of a truck, why not get paid for it? Class A CDL, a Class A Commercial Driver License, gives you the power to drive for a living, and the process is easier than you think.
Your first step to getting a CDL is having a Texas Driver License. This is required to apply for a Commercial Learner Permit, which you’ll need to have for at least 14 days prior to taking a skills exam. Your CLP is valid for up to 180 days and can be renewed once.
In order to be eligible for a Class A CDL, you’ll need to meet certain qualifications. You must be 18 years or older to get a CDL in the state of Texas, and you’ll need to obtain a physical and a Department of Transportation medical card, which you can do with any examiner certified by the National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners.
If you meet the eligibility requirements, your next step is to enroll in a CDL course. You have no shortage of options around San Antonio, including Roadmaster Drivers School and the Alamo Colleges District. Some institutions offer easy financing for your tuition, and other schools may offer a direct gateway to employment after completing your coursework.
Once you feel comfortable behind the wheel, you can apply for your CLP and take your skills test. The test will include a pre-trip vehicle inspection, skills like parallel parking and docking, and a live road test. After you’ve passed, you’ll have your Class A CDL and you’ll be one step closer to driving for a living.
